The Deep
Tower Street, HU1 4DP. Grid E5
The Deep is a large aquarium situated at Sammy’s Point, at the confluence of the River Hull and the Humber estuary. It was designed by Sir Terry Farrell and built as one of the UK National Lottery’s Millennium Commission projects, opening in March 2002. The Deep is billed as the world’s first submarium (”sub” meaning deep or under, “mar” representing marine life and “rium” combining planetarium, aquarium and vivarium). The Deep’s tanks hold 2,500,000 litres of water and 87 tonnes of salt, and they house thousands of sea creatures. Marine biologists look after these creatures, including seven species of shark, as well as carrying out research into the marine environment. The Deep staff also run an extensive education programme with local schools.
This project is funded by the generosity of Lottery players.
Without those who play the Lottery, this and many other projects simply wouldn’t be possible. Thankyou.
