Product Details

The first months of the Great War are the least well known of a conflict which was supposed to be over by Christmas 1914. Many Hull men were in action from Mons to the Marne, with over 100 local men serving with the Coldstream Guards who were involved in almost every major battle of 1914. This booklooks at the Hull men in the Army, Navy and Mercantile Marine and those who supplemented their decimated ranks in 1915. Included are the stories of local policemen serving with the BEF and many prominent Hull businessmen, including Sidney Hellyar, Hull Ship Owner. The deaths of so many Hull men at the second Battle of Ypres, were the first heavy losses suffered by the city in 1915.
